It's a small job. You can squeeze it in.
"I have a small job and I need your help. It shouldn't take that long." Well, let me tell you, there is no such thing as a small job. At least the way my brain works. I just took the left/right brain test and I'm 60/40; 60% left brain (logic, analysis, mathematics) and 40% right brain (creativity, imagination and intuition).
Before I even meet with you for an initial consultation, I have already googled your address and looked you up on Facebook so I know a little bit about you (and to make sure you are not some crazed murderer). After our meeting, before I even have the job and usually at 9:30 at night while laying in bed, I start pinning ideas for your project. So right there, I'm about 4 hours invested into you. Once you hire me, I really get down to the nitty gritty. I sketch, I create several mood boards, all along the way asking myself, "Will you like this" (you have to live with the outcome every day and you are paying me) and "does this represent me as a designer." Ultimately, I design for you but the artist in me wants the result to be something I am proud of. It has to represent the 4 principals of interior design: contrast, proportion, color & balance.
Yes, I approach things in both an analytical and emotional way. It's very confusing. I am full of juxtapositions. I have social anxiety when I know I have to be somewhere where there is a large group. I do however, like to have one on one conversations with people. I will remember that your grandma was a farmer and that your son is having surgery. I think that is why I can do my job. I listen. I listen to what you want and I automatically feel invested in you and your project.
While it may seem like a "small job", it still takes a piece of my emotional, creative and mental space. I don't have a magic wand. I can't walk into a room and tell you exactly what you need to do. I have to approach it in an analytical way. Once I do that, I can tap into my creativity and hopefully provide you with a beautiful and functional space.
So, if I am not able to take on your small job at that moment, please understand, it's the way my brain works. Once I have time to dedicate to you, I will be there to listen, all 60/40 of me.
This not a small job but it is an idea board I put together, today, while waiting to hear if I have the job. If I don't get it, I still had fun dreaming about it! Pretty cool, huh?
